New Moon

Time to plant the seeds of a new cycle

The New Moon is the moment when the moon is invisible in the sky. The night is dark, quiet, brimming with potential. This is the zero point of the lunar month — the most powerful time for new beginnings, setting intentions, and inner renewal.

Energetically the New Moon is a yin phase: silence and the seed. Like a seed in the soil before it sprouts — everything is already there, but nothing is yet visible. This is why the New Moon is not a time for vigorous action but a time for intention. What do you want to grow in the next 28 days?

In many traditions the New Moon was considered a sacred time for rites of purification and planting. Women gathered together, lit candles, wrote wishes, and released them into fire. In Indian culture Amavasya — the day of the New Moon — is a time for meditation and honouring one's ancestors.

A ritual: on the night of the New Moon, light a black or dark blue candle. Write three intentions for the new cycle — not demands of life, but a direction you wish to move toward. Read them aloud. Bury the paper in soil or burn it — surrender the intention to the universe.
